HOPE-SAM

The Health Outcomes, Pathogenesis and Epidemiology of Severe Acute Malnutrition (HOPE-SAM) study enrolled 750 children with complicated SAM from two hospitals in Harare (Parirenyatwa and Harare Central Hospital), and one in Lusaka (University Teaching Hospital). This is a longitudinal observational study with embedded laboatory substudies, which aims to understand the long-term outcomes of children hospitalized with SAM over 12 months of follow-up, and to identify underlying mechanistic pathways that are tractable to future intervention. The study has completed all its field work, and data and laboratory analyses are currently underway.

Study Location: Harare Central Hospital and Parirenyatwa Hospital.
